The Oxford Company of Musicians was formed in 1996 as a self-governing co-operative consortium of professional Oxford based musicians. It is now a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.

The Oxford Company of Musicians has been supported by Southern Arts, OCDA, the Musicians' Union, Oxfords City Council, East Oxford Action Community Chest, Education Action Zone, Oxfords and Swindon Co-operative Society and Oxfordshire Youth Music Trust.

In 2001 OCM was awarded a £50,000 Single Regeneration Budget grant for a 2 year music project on Barton council estate.
